Jamie Coreth (b. 1989) is an acclaimed British portrait artist whose work has been exhibited and awarded internationally. Known for his intelligent and contemporary approach to portraiture, Coreth seeks to capture qualities that are true to the character and presence of his sitters.
He graduated in Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of Oxford in 2010 before undertaking training in drawing and painting at Charles Cecil Studios, the London Atelier of Representational Art (LARA), and the Florence Academy of Art. While at LARA, Coreth was awarded a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust Award in 2012, and in 2014, he received the Florence Academy’s ‘Painting of the Year’ prize.
Since 2014, Coreth has established himself as one of Britain’s leading portrait artists. In 2016, he was awarded the Young Artist Award at the BP Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery, London, for Dad Sculpting Me, a portrait of his father, the sculptor Mark Coreth, in his studio. The judges commented that they were “drawn to the timeless quality of the painting and its treatment of a father and son relationship through art.”
In 2018, Broken Bodies, a powerful portrait of former soldier turned sculptor Mark Jackson, was selected for the BP Portrait Exhibition to critical acclaim. In 2020, Portrait of Fatima was shortlisted for the BP Portrait Award and chosen for both the exhibition catalogue cover and the National Portrait Gallery’s national marketing campaign. The work went on to win the Visitors’ Choice Award by a margin of over 1,000 votes. In the same year, Coreth was awarded first prize in a Cecil Beaton–inspired photography competition at the National Portrait Gallery.
In 2021, Coreth was commissioned by the County of Cambridgeshire to paint the first official joint portrait of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The painting was unveiled at the Fitzwilliam Museum in June 2022 and has since been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, the Fitzwilliam Museum, and is currently on travelling display at Peterborough Cathedral (2026).
Coreth lives and works in Wiltshire. While the majority of his practice is undertaken on commission, his work has taken him to paint in America, Australia, and across Europe, and he has exhibited widely throughout the United Kingdom.
Selected commissions include: The County of Cambridgeshire (Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Wales, as The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge); The Corporation of Trinity House of Deptford Strond (Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal); The New Generation Festival and Mascarade Opera Foundation (His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent); Canterbury Cathedral (Dr Robert Willis); His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Mateen of Brunei and Her Highness Princess Anisha Rosnah; The Baltic Exchange (Guy Campbell and Lambros Varnivides); Ministry of Defence Chaplains (Jonathan Woodhouse, Stephen Robbins, Dr David Coulter).
We were drawn to the timeless quality of the painting and its treatment of a father and son relationship through art.

Jamie’s influences may be rooted in the great traditions of the past – the swagger portraits of Sargent and de Laszlo – but he is also of his own generation, and deceptively modern. he is undoubtedly one of the best portrait artists working today.

I fell in love with Jamie’s painting many years ago, after seeing his work at the National Gallery and online. Eventually we made contact, and I sat for him perhaps three times for a portrait. Those afternoons in his beautiful studio were utterly delightful: he is an exemplar of self-effacing charm and fascinating person to learn from. Seeing the piece come together was genuinely breath-taking. He manages to balance a grand, traditional technique with a modern vision, let alone produce a stunning realism. My portrait holds centre-stage in my house, which is potentially a bit big-headed. But it’s a Coreth, and it’s magical, and I’m so very delighted we did it.
