The process behind the portrait

Commissioning a bespoke work of art can seem like a daunting process, as there are numerous elements to consider. However, we are on hand to help you at every step of the way to ensure the process is as smooth and simple as possible and find the right artist for you. We have learnt that the best results come from creative partnerships where the artist reflects the client’s personality as much as their appearance.

Our Process

Stage one

The first thing to ask is what you are trying to achieve. We are here to help you select the right artist for your project. For example, some artists are more proficient at capturing a portrait of a child, men than woman, uniforms or a detailed background.

We then discuss the benefits of different media, be it oil on canvas, charcoal on paper or sculpture, as well as the size of the finished work, as it may need to fit in a certain space.

Stage two

Once you have made your decision, Fine Art Commissions engage your chosen artist, securing their services and confirming the quote with your deposit. From that point, it is all about the collaboration between you and the artist. We are on hand to discuss sittings, outfits and timing, if needed, but otherwise we leave the sitter and artist to work together, only intervening if necessary. Our experience has taught us that direct communication between artist and sitter not only saves time but creates a connection and therefore a more interesting portrait.

Stage three

Once the portrait is finished, and both you and the artist are completely happy with the painting, drawing or sculpture, we are on hand to discuss any finishing touches – be that framing (or plinths if sculpture), varnishing, shipping and / or installation, if required.

The portrait of Canon Brain Mountford, commissioned by University Church for his retirement, captures both the confidence and informality of Brian’s character. The artist was a delight to work with and Fine Art Commissions were extremely helpful and professional in managing the whole process.
